South Calcutta Girls’ College, the third oldest girls’ college in West Bengal, India, completed its glorious seventy five years of historic journey in September, 2007. The historic journey started at the initiative of the Beltala Girls’ Education Society (Kolkata based local Society) in 1932 with the noble mission of promoting higher education among girls. During its journey through times, it had to cross many hurdles.
It has been unceasingly searching for newer heights in search of quality and excellence in the higher educational service to the young women of Bengal. The shared efforts of the students, teachers, staff, guardians and management, past and present, their vision, their spirit and sacrifice have made the South Calcutta Girls’ College of today.
Now it is our sacred duty and responsibility to carry forward the mission inherited from our great predecessors. Education as we understand is not knowledge of facts, but of values, which inculcate freedom of mind. It is independence of thought and action, rephrased by our motto, ‘Sa Vidya Ya Vimuktaya’. Inspired and motivated by this spirit, we have undertaken the task of spreading the light of knowledge to liberate women, specially women from the middle and below middle class background, from the fetters of ignorance.
As there has been a paradigm shift in our perception of the goals of education, we strive to impart the skills and attitudes needed to achieve success within the framework of time tested values. Hence, besides offering Honours courses in thirteen subjects (Science and Arts) and in General courses in sixteen subjects (Science and Arts) we have also launched Vocational Courses.
In order to reach the unreached and to extend education among all, South Calcutta Girls’ College offers Open and Distance Learning simultaneously by opening a Study Centre of Netaji Subhas Open University (NSOU) in its premises. The college has been selected as the postgraduate Study Centre in Geography by NSOU which adds another feather in the cap of our much reputed Geography Department.
It is to be mentioned that our college also provides residential facility, though limited, which have proved to be a boon for girls residing outside the city and even to the students of neighbouring states.
We look forward to a prosperous future and pledge to preserve long heritage with a mission to empower women with necessary knowledge appropriate to the 21 century so that they would have a greater mark on the society. A lot has been achieved in the past, lots is being worked towards but still lot more to achieve.
